BRIEF

The Vancouver Asian Film Festival Society (VAFF) is a not-for-profit organization that provides a forum for independent North American Asian filmmakers to showcase their work. This year, VAFF celebrates its 15th birthday, which it celebrates with City of Vancouver's 125th anniversary. Using the theme "Love Letters to Vancouver", VAFF is looking for a visual message that would resonate with the audience. The message will be consistently applied to all the promotional materials such as bus shelter ad and posters, as well as to printed and web collateral.

SOLUTION

The concept originated from the plywood wall covered with supportive messages after the 2011 riot. In spite of the tragedic event, people who cared about the city came forward and demonstrated true compassion toward their hometown. When the viewer saw the poster at a bus shelter, it was as if he/she is looking at one of the plywood walls, which triggered fond memories of the love sent forth by the public.

Messages in various languages are used to highlight the diversity of the film festival. Graffiti style typeface is used to enhance the feel of street art. Polaroid photos of film stills tell the audience about the film festival.

Other collateral, such as the 54-page program guide, are designed along the same concept.
